2010 Summer Swimming/Boating Lessons

The Harvard Town Beach follows the American Red Cross Learn To Swim program. The program includes six swimming levels, Level 6- Personal Water Safety and Level 6- Lifeguard Readiness/Guard Start, Water Safety Aides class (instructor preparation) and Lifeguarding instruction.  Instructors are available at the beach each day from 11am to 5pm to test swimmers for the appropriate level. A swimmer′s level will be adjusted by the instructor during the first week of lessons, if necessary.

 
This year there will be three 2-week sessions.  The cost for a 2-week session is $30.
(Please note that all programs are limited to Harvard residents only)
Session 1              July 5 - July 16 
Session 2              July 19 - July 30
Session 3              August 2 - August 15

 
Sailing and Canoe/Kayak lessons are also being offered during all sessions.  Participants must be at least 8 years old and must pass a 10 minute swim test fully dressed (shoes, socks, long pants, long shirt) which will be administered prior to the start of the lessons.  The cost for sailing lessons is $100 and the cost for canoeing/kayaking lessons is $50.
 
Note: Beach Parking Stickers are required to park at the beach at any time.  The sticker costs $40 and is available to Harvard residents only.  Click here for more details on obtaining a beach sticker.  Stickers can be purchased online by clicking on the 'Register Online' link on the left hand menu.

SWIMMERS MUST

Level 1

§ Be at least 4 years old

Level 2

§ Be able to fully submerge face for 3 seconds

§ Be comfortable in chest deep water

§ Be able to float on front and back (partially supported)

§ Be able to blow bubbles and kick on front and back

Level 3

§ Be able to hold breath and fully submerge head

§ Be able to submerge and retrieve objects in chest deep water

§ Be able to explore deep water

§ Float on front and back unsupported

§ Kick on front and back

§ Be able to turn over from front to back and back to front

§ Back and Front crawl arm action with rhythmic breathing

Level 4

§ Be able to swim at least 15 yards of the following: Front Crawl (w. rhythmic breathing), Back Crawl, Butterfly (kick) and Elementary Backstroke

§ Be able to perform a front dive

§ Be able to front float, back float, and survival float for at least 2 minutes

Level 5

§ Be able to swim at least 25 yards of the following: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, and Elementary Backstroke and 15 yards of Butterfly.

§ Be able to perform the sidestroke and breaststroke kicks for at least 25 yards

§ Be able to perform a standing front dive

§ Be able to survival float and tread water for at least 2 minutes

Level 6- Fitness Swimmer

§ Be able to swim at least 50 yards of the following: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Sidestroke

§ Be able to swim at least 25 yards of the Butterfly

§ Be able to perform a standing front dive

§ Be able to tread water and survival float for at least 3 minutes

Level 6-Personal Water Safety
Level 6- Lifeguard Readiness/Guard Start

§ Be able to swim at least 50 yards of the following: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, Sidestroke(both sides) and Butterfly

§ Be able to perform a front dive

§ Be able to tread water and survival float for at least 3 minutes

§ Be able to swim continuously for at least ½ hour

Water Safety Aides

§ Have completed all Level 6s (includes classes formally Guard Start and Level 6)

§ Have a willingness to volunteer at the Town Beach
